The Great American State Fair on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., was temporarily shut down Friday as extreme heat overwhelmed the event, sending more than a dozen people to the hospital. Organizers announced the postponement until 5 pm via PA system, asking attendees to exit the grounds as ground temperatures soared.
"ground temperatures reaching 135°F and a feel-like temperature of 111°F"
Before the closure, DC Fire and EMS responded to 44 patient contacts, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Eleven people were transported to the hospital, seven receiving advanced life support and four receiving basic life support, the outlet reported. The fair was part of President Donald Trump's Freedom 250 lineup, though that connection did not spare it from the heat.
The brief shutdown highlights the challenges of outdoor events during Washington's summer heat. With temperatures far exceeding safe limits, organizers opted to pause activities rather than risk further heat-related incidents, a decision that affected thousands of visitors on the National Mall.
