Beyoncé surprised fans on July 4 by releasing a new single, "Morning Dew (Donk)," marking her first new music since last year's Cowboy Carter, according to Stereogum and The Independent. The track kicks off a 60-day countdown to her birthday and the 20th anniversary reissue of her sophomore album B'Day, originally released in September 2006, Deadline reported.
Co-written and co-produced by Beyoncé and Pharrell Williams, with additional writing credits for The-Dream and Darius Dixson according to Pitchfork, the song will appear on the upcoming anniversary edition of B'Day on September 4, Billboard noted. The release also includes a visual featuring old footage shot by photographer Cliff Watts, Pitchfork added.
Folha reported that the song was actually recorded in 2013 but left off Beyoncé's self-titled album, and that fans were already aware of its existence, as it had been registered in copyright databases since 2013, with a snippet circulating on social media in 2021 and a full version leaking in 2023. ELLE highlighted that the single has deeper layers beyond its surface, suggesting the lyrics carry a broader significance tied to the holiday and the album's reissue.
The 60-day timeline aligns with Beyoncé's birthday on September 4, the same date the B'Day reissue is expected, making "Morning Dew (Donk)" the first of what multiple outlets suggest may be additional releases leading up to the milestone. The song is available now on all streaming platforms, The Independent confirmed.
