Christopher Barrett, the former director of Destiny 2 and Marathon, has settled a lawsuit against Sony and Bungie that stemmed from his termination over alleged sexual misconduct. The settlement brings an end to a legal battle that highlighted tensions around the company's acquisition by Sony in 2022.
According to Kotaku, Barrett filed a $100 million lawsuit claiming Sony fired him to avoid paying over $80 million in vested bonuses tied to its $3.6 billion acquisition of Bungie. Sony had accused Barrett of what Kotaku described as a "pattern of misconduct" involving unwanted messages to female employees. The financial terms of the settlement were not disclosed, and neither party commented on the specific outcome.
"The outcome is one I am very satisfied with."
Barrett, a 25-year Bungie veteran, expressed satisfaction with the resolution, as reported by PC Gamer. The case drew attention to the high-stakes compensation structures in major studio acquisitions and the challenges of managing workplace conduct claims in the gaming industry.
As part of the settlement, Barrett's name will be added to the credits of Bungie's upcoming game Marathon, Kotaku reported. That move appeared to address one of Barrett's likely concerns about his legacy at the studio, even as the company moves forward under Sony's ownership.
