Prime Video has released first-look images for Mike Flanagan's eight-episode adaptation of Stephen King's classic 1974 novel "Carrie," offering the first glimpse of Summer Howell as the telekinetic teenager. The series, which was greenlit in April 2025, is set to premiere this fall and marks the first time King's debut novel has been adapted as a streaming series, more than 50 years after its original publication, as reported by Deadline.
Howell's casting came after an extensive search, with the young actress auditioning against more than 1,000 other candidates, according to Deadline. She stars opposite Samantha Sloyan, who plays Carrie's fiercely protective mother, Margaret. The series is described as a reinvention of the original story by showrunner Mike Flanagan, known for his work on "The Haunting of Hill House."
"We wanted to build something new from the book and take a completely different road to prom."
The Playlet reported that this reimagining follows Carrie White as a socially isolated teenager who has spent most of her life confined to her home by her mother, a departure from previous film adaptations. The new series promises to expand on the source material while preserving the core horror of a misfit high-schooler with telekinetic powers.
Variety noted that the eight-episode series is described as a "reinvention" of King's classic, while SoapCentral highlighted that the first-look images reveal a modern adaptation with an expanded take on the original story. BroadwayWorld also shared the photos, emphasizing that the series is based on King's landmark debut novel.
