Extreme heat and severe weather created major challenges for Fourth of July celebrations across the eastern United States as communities marked America's 250th birthday. In Washington, D.C., thousands gathered on the National Mall for the Salute to America celebration despite sweltering temperatures. Gates opened around 5 p.m., but a severe thunderstorm later forced organizers to temporarily evacuate the event before activities resumed.President Trump ultimately took the stage later in the evening, calling the nation's semiquincentennial "the big day" as celebrations continued despite the weather delays. The event also featured what organizers described as a record-breaking fireworks display. Pyrotecnico CEO Stephen Vitale said the goal was to create a memorable show worthy of the historic occasion. The dangerous heat affected celebrations well beyond the nation's capital. Over the past two days, organizers canceled, delayed or modified events throughout the East Coast because of extreme temperatures. In Washington, D.C., the Great American State Fair postponed its opening by two hours on Saturday after temporarily shutting down the previous day because of the heat. Some attendees reported seeing people overcome by the high temperatures.Emergency responders prepared for a busy holiday weekend. D.C. Fire and EMS Chief John Donnelly said the Fourth of July is typically the department's busiest day of the year, but officials expected to respond to more than 1,000 emergency calls over the holiday weekend.Officials also warned that the combination of extreme heat, poor air quality and extended fireworks displays could create additional health concerns, especially for older adults, young children and those with respiratory conditions.Explore: NBCPalmSprings.com, where we are connecting the Valley.
