Environmental activist Erin Brockovich has launched a public mapping tool to track data center development across the United States, according to Hacker News. The map documents where data centers are being built, delayed, contested, or abandoned as part of the AI infrastructure race, and includes a form for community members to report local impacts.
Gizmodo reported that the crowdsourced map overlays operational and planned hyperscale AI data centers with community-submitted reports, revealing patterns of growth, conflict, and uncertainty around AI infrastructure development. Brockovich's initiative aims to capture the real-world footprint of the AI infrastructure race, highlighting where data centers are welcomed versus where they face delays, contests, or abandonment.
"The site also includes a form for community members to report data centers and their local impacts," Hacker News noted, emphasizing the grassroots nature of the project.
According to a Google share, Brockovich described the website as a "work in progress" that relies on community-reported data, continuing her long history of environmental activism. Chron.com specifically highlighted the map's focus on Texas, where a rapid data center boom has raised concerns about energy consumption, water usage, and environmental consequences amid growing tensions between the tech industry and local communities.
