DuckDuckGo Enables Default YouTube Ad Blocking on Desktop and iPhone, Android Coming Soon

DuckDuckGo has rolled out a significant update to its browser that automatically blocks video ads on YouTube, making it one of the few mainstream browsers to target the platform's ad load by default. The feature is now live for users on iPhone, Windows, and Mac, with Android support expected shortly.
According to BleepingComputer, the browser uses filter lists from the open-source uBlock Origin ad blocker to detect and block commercials. These filters target ads that appear before a video starts playing as well as those that interrupt playback. Unlike typical ad-blocking extensions that require manual installation, DuckDuckGo has built the functionality directly into its browser, enabling it without any user action.
"DuckDuckGo’s free browser is bulking up its ad blocking to stamp out commercials that pop up on YouTube's website."
PCWorld positioned the move as a direct challenge to Google, noting that DuckDuckGo is now pitting its ad-blocking capabilities against Google's ad ecosystem. However, the report also warned that Google has a history of fighting such tools and may attempt to break the feature in future updates, as it has done with other ad blockers.
"The move positions DuckDuckGo as a direct challenger to Google's ad ecosystem, but Google is expected to push back."
Engadget confirmed the feature is enabled by default, and that it extends beyond YouTube to block video ads across other sites as well. DuckDuckGo's approach follows a similar strategy by Brave browser, which already blocks YouTube ads. The trade-off, as PCMag noted, is that users may encounter occasional website breakage or missing content, though DuckDuckGo aims to minimize disruptions through careful filter curation.
