When Bolt CEO Ryan Breslow took to the stage at Fortune's Workforce Innovation Summit last month and declared that his HR team had been "creating problems that didn't exist," the HR profession did what it often does in moments like this: it defended itself with data, process and policy. It explained why the comparison was unfair. It pointed out, correctly, that Breslow had simply renamed the function "People Ops." It was thorough. It was accurate. The response almost certainly convinced nobody. That response is, in miniature, the problem.
