Biochar-doped hydrogel boosts solar water evaporation efficiency, study finds
Summary
A study from Harbin Institute of Technology (Shenzhen) developed a hybrid solar evaporator using biochar-doped hydrogel that efficiently converts sunlight into vapour. The material, made by incorporating sorghum straw biochar into a polyzwitterionic hydrogel, is soft, porous, and water-rich. It absorbs sunlight, localises heat at the evaporation surface, and continuously delivers water for rapid evaporation, improving water transport and reducing heat loss in solar interfacial evaporation.

· 3 pulledSolar interfacial evaporation is attractive because it uses sunlight to generate vapour at the water-air interface, which can be used for water purification, desalination, and other applications.
The hybrid hydrogel developed by incorporating sorghum straw biochar into a polyzwitterionic hydrogel results in a soft, porous, water-rich material.
The material can absorb sunlight, localise heat at the evaporation surface, and continuously deliver water to that surface for rapid evaporation.
