Apple filed a lawsuit against OpenAI on Friday, accusing the AI company of stealing trade secrets to build its own AI hardware devices. The complaint, submitted in the Northern District of California, alleges that former Apple employees leaked confidential information about unreleased products, components, and manufacturing processes while being recruited by OpenAI, according to MacRumors. The lawsuit marks a dramatic escalation between two of Silicon Valley's most prominent firms, the Financial Times reported.
"This case is about Apple's former employees stealing Apple's trade secrets for the benefit of OpenAI."
The suit specifically names OpenAI hardware lead and former Apple designer Tang Tan, along with former electrical engineer Chang Liu, as orchestrating a months-long scheme. MacRumors reported that these individuals directed Apple employees who were interviewing with OpenAI to provide details on unreleased devices, vendor relationships, and manufacturing methods.
"Apple alleges the misconduct was directed by OpenAI's senior leadership, including a long-time former employee."
Beyond the trade secret misappropriation claim, Apple also accuses OpenAI of breach of contract, according to CNN via News Channel 3-12. The alleged theft is tied to OpenAI's yet-to-be-unveiled AI gadgets, which Apple claims were developed using the stolen proprietary information. The lawsuit seeks to halt what it describes as a coordinated effort by OpenAI to poach both talent and secrets from the iPhone maker.
Apple's legal action represents a significant confrontation between two tech giants that have had a complex relationship. The Financial Times noted that the suit marks the collapse of what was once a cooperative dynamic between the companies. Apple, in a statement to MacRumors, said it is suing to protect the hard work of its employees, emphasizing that its teams "are constantly developing breakthrough" innovations.
