Summary
This correspondence article discusses findings from the PANORAMIC trial published in The Lancet Microbe, showing that nirmatrelvir–ritonavir (Paxlovid) retains antiviral activity against omicron SARS-CoV-2 variants in a highly immune population. The treatment accelerated viral clearance, reduced culturable virus frequency, and showed no increased viral rebound, mutagenesis, or resistance. However, the authors highlight an important immunological observation: the treatment attenuated the infection-associated rise in spike antibody titres, which may have implications for immune memory and future protection against SARS-CoV-2.
