storyboard18.comAnthropic restores Claude Mythos 5 access after the US government eases restrictionsstoryboard18.comAnthropic has begun restoring access to its advanced artificial intelligence model, Claude Mythos 5, after the US government eased restrictions that had temporarily blocked its release over national security concerns, as per a Reuters report. The company announced on Friday that it had received approval to make Mythos 5 available to a select group of "trusted" US organisations that operate and protect critical infrastructure. According to a source familiar with the decision, more than 100 companies and institutions, including several Fortune 500 firms, will be granted access under the revised directive. The move partially reverses a government order issued on June 12 that required Anthropic to suspend access to its most advanced AI models, Mythos 5 and Fable 5, amid concerns that powerful frontier AI systems could be exploited by hostile foreign actors."Today, the government notified us that Mythos 5, our strongest cybersecurity model, can be redeployed to a set of US organisations that operate and defend critical infrastructure," Anthropic said in a statement. The company added that it is working to restore access quickly while continuing discussions with the government to broaden availability and eventually resume public access to Fable 5.Also read: What is Jalapeño? Earlier on Friday, OpenAI said it would delay the broader release of GPT-5.6 at the government's request, limiting early access to a small group of vetted partners. The government's role in determining which organisations receive access to frontier AI models has drawn criticism from free speech advocates and industry leaders. John Coleman, legislative counsel at the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, questioned the lack of transparency around the selection process, saying it gives the government significant influence over who can access emerging AI technologies.OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also criticised the approach, saying safety testing is valuable but expressing concern over the government deciding which customers are permitted to use advanced models.Anthropic said the latest government directive also removes the requirement for export licences when trusted organisations or Anthropic employees who are not US citizens access Mythos 5. However, licensing restrictions will continue to apply to organisations that are not included on the approved list.According to the source, many of the approved organisations are part of Anthropic's Project Glasswing, a programme involving around 100 technology companies and institutions. The government is also considering allowing Anthropic to release Fable 5 more broadly, although no timeline has been announced. The restrictions stem from an executive order signed by US President Donald Trump earlier this month, creating a voluntary framework under which AI developers provide certain frontier models to the government for review before releasing them to trusted partners.
