Amazon has initiated an internal investigation into a fire at one of its third-party delivery partner facilities in Uttarakhand that claimed the lives of two workers, while stating it will determine any further action after the police complete their probe, as per a Reuters report. The fatal fire broke out on June 5 at a facility operated by M&M Logistics Solutions, an Amazon delivery partner in Uttarakhand. According to police findings reviewed by Reuters, the premises allegedly did not have a valid fire safety clearance and lacked essential safety infrastructure, including fire alarms, smoke detectors and a proper emergency exit.In a statement, Amazon said it would take "appropriate action" in accordance with its internal policies once the investigation by local authorities concludes.People familiar with the matter said the company has also begun an independent review of the incident alongside the official investigation. The development has renewed scrutiny of workplace safety standards across third-party logistics operations that support India's fast-growing e-commerce sector. The Amazon India Workers Union has called for a judicial inquiry into the incident, describing the deaths as a serious workplace safety failure. The union urged authorities to examine whether adequate safety measures were in place at the facility.M&M Logistics Solutions operates dozens of Amazon delivery centres across northern India. While the company functions as an independent logistics partner, Amazon's supplier code of conduct requires vendors to maintain safe working conditions and comply with workplace safety standards. The policy also allows the company to suspend or terminate partnerships if vendors are found to have violated those requirements. The incident comes after Amazon faced labour-related scrutiny in India last year over allegations concerning working conditions during an extreme heatwave. The company has consistently maintained that employee health and workplace safety remain key operational priorities. Also read: Anthropic seeks better terms from Amazon as AI economics shift in its favour
