Amanda Seyfried revealed in an interview with British GQ that she was once attached to play Joni Mitchell in a biopic, and during the COVID-19 pandemic, she learned to play Mitchell's entire "Blue" album on dulcimer, piano, and guitar in preparation, according to Variety. The biopic was about Mitchell and her manager Elliot Roberts, but the project was shelved after Roberts' death. Seyfried also met Mitchell, who invited her to her L.A. home, Variety reported.
"I felt like a bona fide musician."
Rolling Stone reported that Seyfried described feeling like a "bona fide musician" after completing the last song, and wept upon finishing the final track, 'The Last Time I Saw Richard'. The 1971 album 'Blue' is widely regarded as a landmark in Mitchell's career, and Seyfried's deep dive into the material underscores her commitment to the role.
Variety noted that Seyfried learned the album across multiple instruments, a testament to her dedication. The shelving of the project after Roberts' death leaves fans wondering what might have been, but Seyfried's preparation offers a glimpse into her approach to portraying the iconic singer-songwriter.
