Hellblade Studio's Final Chapter Begins as Ninja Theory Staff Face Redundancy After Failed Rescue Deals
The end is now visibly underway for Ninja Theory, the acclaimed studio behind Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, as employees report that layoffs have begun following Xbox's announcement last month that it intends to close the developer. According to PlayStation Universe, the studio has reportedly started laying off employees after the second wave of Xbox cuts, with numerous team members now departing the Cambridge-based developer. The closure comes after two separate agreements for Ninja Theory to be acquired fell through, as reported by VGChartz. Xbox's restructuring, which resulted in 268 people being laid off across the company, left Ninja Theory without a buyer, and the studio is now in consultation with employees on a possible closure while other paths continue to be explored. KitGuru noted that while most of the studios Microsoft split off earlier this year, including Undead Labs, Double Fine, and Compulsion Games, have managed to find new homes, both deals for Ninja Theory collapsed. As the redundancy process kicks off, staff have taken to LinkedIn to bid farewell, with journalist Chris Kerr and VideoGamesChronicle reporting that a number of employees are either at risk of being laid off or have already been let go, according to VGChartz. The emotional toll is clear in the messages from departing team members, including technical sound designer Alessio Mellina, gameplay programmer Katrin Mair, and PCap tech staff Xoe Subari. "It's incredibly sad knowing that we won't get to finish what we were working on." That sentiment, shared by Hellblade staff as they depart, underscores the abrupt end to a studio known for its ambitious and emotionally resonant games. Rock Paper Shotgun reported that the studio looks to be in the process of informing staff they're at risk of being let go, with one developer's farewell message capturing the bittersweet pride in the work despite the outcome. "Even if I knew how it would end, I would do it again." Eurogamer confirmed that the studio's consultation process with Xbox, following the second wave of cuts last week, seems to have resulted in layoffs, marking more bad news for Ninja Theory today. The future of the next Hellblade game now hangs in uncertainty, as gameloop.gg noted, with developers saying roles are at risk or have ended after Xbox began consultation on the proposed closure.
