The Robert Rauschenberg Foundation and the Rema Hort Mann Fund have named Jacolby Satterwhite the first recipient of their new Artists Living With Cancer Grant, a $25,000 unrestricted award for New York-based artists undergoing treatment. The conceptual and digital artist, who has battled cancer since age twelve, will receive the grant at RHMF's thirtieth anniversary gala in October. "The unrestricted award, co-developed by the Rema Hort Mann Fund and the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, supports artists with cancer by covering medical bills, housing, and studio costs." The grant, as reported by The Art Newspaper, is designed specifically to assist artists living in New York who are currently undergoing cancer treatment. Satterwhite, originally from South Carolina, has built a career around multimedia work that often blends digital animation, performance, and personal history. Satterwhite's long experience with cancer adds a deeply personal layer to the award. "He has battled cancer since age twelve," Artforum noted, underscoring the artist's endurance alongside his creative output. The unrestricted nature of the grant allows recipients to direct funds where they are most needed, whether for medical expenses or maintaining their studio practice. The award is the first of its kind from the partnership, which aims to address the financial strain that cancer treatment places on artists. By covering essentials like housing and studio costs, the grant seeks to let recipients focus on recovery and their work without constant financial worry. Satterwhite will be honored at the gala ceremony this October.
