Netflix and Shondaland Expand the Bridgerton Universe with a Prequel Centered on Violet and Edmund

Netflix and Shondaland have officially greenlit a new limited series prequel in the Bridgerton universe, this time focusing on the young romance of Lady Violet Bridgerton and her late husband, Viscount Edmund Bridgerton. The announcement, made on Thursday, October 8, 2026, via an Instagram post from the show's official account, promises to explore the love story that fans have long heard about but never seen. "Dearest Gentle Reader," Netflix announced with an Instagram post. "This author writes with most exciting news..." The new series follows the model of the successful Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, which premiered in 2023. According to TVLine, the project is described as a character-driven origin story, expanding the franchise's universe with another deep dive into a beloved character's past. HuffPost UK noted that Netflix's Tudum outlet teased the project as "an exciting new spin-off" that will follow "the romance of young Violet and her eventual husband Viscount Edmund Bridgerton, the parents of Bridgerton's eight beloved siblings." While casting for the younger versions of Violet and Edmund has not yet been announced, the series will chronicle the early life of the Bridgerton matriarch and her romance with Edmund, as reported by Express and Star. The announcement comes as the main series prepares for its fifth season in 2027, which Bleeding Cool reported will center on characters Francesca and Michaela Stirling. Bleeding Cool also highlighted that this new project expands the Bridgerton universe under the production of Shonda Rhimes. Thetvcave.com noted that viewers have only heard pieces of the marriage that started it all, and now the woman who has spent years guiding her children's romantic lives will finally have her own story told. For fans waiting for season five, HuffPost UK summed up the moment: "It's a good time to be a Bridgerton fan."
