Blender 5.3 Alpha Adds Direct Gaussian Splat Imports, Boosting Photorealism Workflows

The upcoming Blender 5.3 release, currently in alpha, is set to natively support importing 3D Gaussian Splats, a move that streamlines photorealistic scene creation in the open-source 3D software. According to Creative Bloq, users will be able to bring in splats from PLY and SPZ files, though export functionality is not yet available. The full version is expected to launch in November. This integration means artists can now render these splats using Blender's existing engines, including Workbench, EEVEE, and Cycles, as reported by FREEYORK. The feature elevates 3D realism by allowing for easier incorporation of real-world captures, a significant step for the software's growing user base. "This is not a drill," 80 Level declared, emphasizing the significance of the update for the 3D community. The addition of native Gaussian splat support is seen as a major workflow improvement, reducing the need for external plugins or complex workarounds. While the import feature is a clear win, the lack of export support means artists cannot yet save scenes back to splat formats. Still, as Creative Bloq noted, the ability to render these splats with existing engines makes the feature immediately useful for look development and final renders alike.
