The CLARITY Act failed a cloture vote 49-60, but backers are optimistic it can be resurrected like the GENIUS bill. With no federal crypto law, the SEC and CFTC are filling the gap.

Congress invests in AI as CLARITY fails
The CLARITY Act's failure in the Senate is the day's biggest political story, but the real through-line is how Washington is entangled with AI. A new analysis shows one in five members of Congress has investments in the industry, even as regulators step in to fill the legislative void. Meanwhile, the US and China are talking AI safety ahead of a summit, and Y Combinator is spreading its political donations across both parties.
AI money and politics
The CLARITY Act's collapse in the Senate highlights a growing tension: lawmakers are deeply invested in the industry they're supposed to regulate.
Sludge found that roughly one in five members of Congress or their families hold investments in AI companies, with disclosed values up to $287 million. That's a lot of potential conflicts as AI legislation moves through committees.
Y Combinator's PAC donated $117,647 to 66 federal PACs this cycle, with nearly half going to Republicans like Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley. It's a deliberate strategy to build friends on both sides of the aisle.
Global AI maneuvering
Beyond the US, governments are positioning themselves for an AI-shaped future, from safety talks to infrastructure hubs.
US and Chinese officials met in New York to set up an AI safety communication channel ahead of the Trump-Xi summit. Treasury Secretary Bessent called it successful, but the real test is whether the channel actually gets used.
South Korea's PM says the government is making seamless preparations to launch its Global AI Hub, which aims to tackle disease and climate change. The location selection process is supposed to be fair and transparent.
