Brent crude hit $107.86, its highest since May, on escalating Gulf hostilities. The 13% weekly gain is the headline, but the real story is the market pricing in prolonged supply disruption.

Oil surge and inflation fears grip markets
Today's finance news is dominated by a single, sharp narrative: oil prices are spiking, bond yields are climbing, and everyone is bracing for the next Fed move. The Middle East conflict is the immediate driver, but the underlying worry is that this isn't a blip, it's a structural shift in the cost of energy and capital.
Oil and inflation
The oil story is the day's biggest thread, with multiple angles on how higher energy costs are feeding through to bonds, fuel pumps, and central bank calculations.
Diesel at $5.98 is a different beast from crude, it's the fuel that moves everything in the U.S. economy. A $6 national average would be a first, and the pass-through to consumer goods is already baked in.
One analyst is calling a 'late-stage bubble' as bonds and oil rise together. That's the uncomfortable combo: higher energy costs feeding inflation expectations, which in turn push yields higher, which then hit asset valuations.
The CPI print is the next big catalyst. A modest upside surprise could tip the Fed into a hike at next week's meeting. The market is already pricing in that risk, but the actual decision is still live.
Housing and rates
Higher borrowing costs are already hitting real estate, and the next Fed meeting could tighten the screw further.

Home sales fell to their slowest pace since mid-2025, even with the highest supply in a decade. Buyers are frozen by mortgage rates and prices. The inventory is there, but the demand isn't.

A BRICS currency has been floated for years, but the 2024 Kazan summit produced no common-currency commitment. Here's why the hard structural obstacles — no fiscal union, China's closed capital account, intra-bloc rivalry — make a near-term dollar rival implausible.
