China launches world's first wind-powered underwater datacentre off Shanghai coast

China has launched the world's first wind-powered underwater datacentre off the coast of Shanghai. The Shanghai Lingang undersea datacentre, with a 24-megawatt capacity, is a joint project between HiCloud Technology and China Communications Construction. Submerged 10 metres below the surface and located over 6 miles offshore, the facility is powered by nearby wind turbines and uses less power and water than traditional land-based datacentres. The project addresses energy challenges driven by China's AI boom.
