Supreme Court upholds states' rights to count mail-in ballots received after Election Day

Summary

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 to uphold laws in Illinois and other states that allow counting of mail-in ballots that are cast by Election Day but arrive afterward. The majority opinion, authored by Justice Amy Coney Barrett (a Trump appointee), held that federal law dictates when ballots must be cast, but state law determines when they must be received. The ruling rejected a challenge by President Donald Trump and Republicans seeking to require ballots be delivered by Election Day. The decision also appears to render moot a separate federal challenge to Illinois' law brought by Republican Rep. Mike Bost.
