The numbers in a new CSIS study are almost too large to grasp: over 2 million casualties, 450,000 Russians dead — more than four times all U.S. war deaths since World War II combined, and thirty times the Soviet toll in Afghanistan. Russia is losing eight soldiers for every Ukrainian, with poor villages emptied of men while the wealthy dodge the draft. The front has become World War One with drones — and neither side shows any sign of stopping.
