President Donald Trump changed his travel plans Wednesday following the NATO summit in Turkey, departing aboard the older Air Force One instead of the newer aircraft donated by Qatar.Trump flew from Ankara to RAF Mildenhall in England aboard the previous presidential aircraft after sending the newer jet ahead. He said the change allowed U.S. military personnel stationed at the base an opportunity to tour the aircraft before his arrival. The Qatari-donated jet, estimated to be worth about $400 million, has drawn bipartisan criticism since it was accepted last year. Lawmakers from both parties have raised questions about the legal, ethical and national security implications of accepting such an expensive gift from a foreign government.Despite those concerns, the U.S. Air Force has said the aircraft is safe, secure and outfitted with advanced technology suitable for presidential missions. The aircraft continues to be a topic of debate as the administration moves forward with its use for official presidential travel.Explore: NBCPalmSprings.com, where we are connecting the Valley.
