Analysis: Washington Wizards' Trae Young extension is a risky long-term bet on a flawed star

As if they were trying to win the 2019 NBA Championship seven years too late, the horrible Washington Wizards made two of the most interesting moves at the deadline last year.

Despite Young's considerable flaws, the deal was a fine one for the Wizards, since they didn't surrender any real assets, happily allowing the Hawks to salary-dump their former franchise cornerstone.

This new deal is the wrong kind of hedge — one that protects against short-term embarrassment at the cost of long-term flexibility.
