Juneteenth Celebration Brings Art and Community to Lauren Halsey's sister dreamer Sculpture Park in South LA

The history of Juneteenth has deep roots in Texas; the now-federal holiday commemorates the June 19, 1865 date when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned of the passage of the Emancipation Proclamation.

In California, a Juneteenth celebration at artist Lauren Halsey's newly opened sister dreamer sculpture park in Los Angeles's South L.A. neighborhood was a beautiful blend of art and affinity.

The Juneteenth festivities included a performance by the Sisters of Watts cheerleading squad, and sampling of soul food from Hot Grease, a Black, queer-owned, women-led pop-up.
