A human rights non-profit group has filed a formal complaint with the International Olympic Committee against FIFA President Gianni Infantino, accusing him of repeatedly violating the Olympic Charter and the IOC's code of ethics. FairSquare submitted the complaint, alleging breaches of political neutrality in Infantino's dealings with United States President Donald Trump and his handling of the Folarin Balogun affair, as reported by Morning Star and Pravda EU.
"FairSquare, a non-profit advocacy group, has asked the International Olympic Committee to investigate whether FIFA President Gianni Infantino was involved in overturning U.S. forward Folarin Balogun's one-match World Cup ban."
According to The New York Times, Balogun was made available for the U.S. round-of-16 match against Belgium after the ban reversal. Infantino has denied involvement in the decision. The complaint frames the Balogun incident as the most recent in a pattern of alleged ethical violations.
"Human rights group FairSquare says Infantino, who became an IOC member in 2020, has repeatedly breached the Olympic Charter and the IOC’s code of ethics, most recently in his handling of the Folarin Balogun affair."
The complaint also highlights Infantino's interactions with President Donald Trump, with News9live reporting that the allegations center on dealings during the FIFA World Cup 2026. FairSquare argues that such political engagement violates the neutrality obligations of an IOC member.
The filing adds pressure on Infantino, who has been an IOC member since 2020, as the IOC has yet to publicly respond to the complaint. The outcome could set a precedent for how the Olympic body enforces its ethical standards among its members.
