The Firefighters, on the fire in Les Gavarres: "We are holding on, but there are 4 hours of suffering left"

The fire in the Gavarres massif, in Empordà, continues to be uncontrolled despite the efforts of firefighters throughout Friday night and Saturday. So far, more than 2,200 hectares have burned, mainly forest mass, and seven municipalities are confined. After a very complicated night, during which the fire reached some urbanizations in Calonge and affected exterior and gardening elements of the houses, and also burned an empty house in Les Cabanyes and a farmhouse on the left flank, with no people inside, the focus on Saturday has been the right flank of the fire. The arrival of the sea breeze at midday made firefighters fear a very complicated afternoon. For the moment, however, they are holding on and the burned hectares have practically not increased. "We are relatively well, we are holding on, but we have 3 or 4 more hours of suffering," explained David Borrell, chief inspector of the Firefighters, at this afternoon's press conference. The wind is expected to remain active until 9 p.m., but if the fire gets out of control, Borrell assured that they have aerial resources to contain the advance of the flames.
