'The bell wasn't the finish line': Atul Hegde's final LinkedIn post reflects the legacy he leaves behind

New Delhi: Two weeks before his untimely passing, Atul Hegde took to LinkedIn to write about what he called a defining year for YAAP. "There are years in business that change your numbers. And then there are years that change your story. FY26 was the latter for us," he wrote. The post celebrated YAAP's listing on the National Stock Exchange, its acquisition of GOZOOP Group, new investments in artificial intelligence, record financial performance, and, above all, the people who helped build the company over the past decade. Following Hegde's death on Tuesday after a heart attack, the post now offers a glimpse into the values that shaped one of India's early digital marketing entrepreneurs. Building a company around digital Hegde entered advertising in the 1990s, when television and print dominated brand spending. Over the next three decades, he built his career around a simple belief that digital would fundamentally change how brands communicate. He began his career with Havas before moving to Vyas Giannetti Creative (VGC), where he held leadership roles in client servicing and business operations. As internet adoption picked up in India, he shifted his focus to digital marketing, becoming CEO of Ignitee Digital Solutions, one of the country's earliest specialist digital agencies. His work later extended beyond agencies. He advised government initiatives such as Make in India, Startup India, and Incredible India, and served on IAMAI's Digital Media Committee. YAAP became his biggest bet In 2016, Hegde founded YAAP. The company brought together creative services, media, influencer marketing, analytics, technology and, in later years, AI-led marketing solutions under one platform. It expanded operations across India, Singapore, and the UAE while working with brands across sectors. FY26 became a landmark year for the company. YAAP became listed on the NSE. The company reported revenue of Rs 184.89 crore for FY26, up from Rs 152.54 crore a year earlier, while profit after tax nearly doubled to Rs 22.2 crore. Reflecting on the listing in his final LinkedIn post, Hegde wrote, "We rang the bell at the NSE and became India's first independent digital agency network to go public. Not because going public was the destination, but because it validated a belief we have held onto for years, that an Indian-born, digital-first company can dream big, stay independent and still build at scale." Always looking ahead Even while celebrating the listing, Hegde's focus remained on what came next. His final post highlighted YAAP's acquisition of GOZOOP Group, describing it as "two entrepreneurial journeys coming together with a shared ambition." He also spoke about the launch of Tags, the company's AI-powered video intelligence platform, the introduction of creator-tech platform Buzzar, and the appointment of creative leader Sambit Mohanty as part of YAAP's next phase of growth. The emphasis reflected a leadership style that consistently looked ahead, whether it was embracing digital marketing in its early years or investing in AI as the next stage of marketing transformation. Supporting entrepreneurs Alongside building YAAP, Hegde co-founded Rainmaker Ventures with Sudhir Menon in 2015. The venture firm focused on startups in digital media, marketing technology, and enterprise technology. Its portfolio included companies such as YAAP, Oplifi, Mellora, and EasyPlan. Over the years, Hegde also served as Director at Brand Planet Consultants, Oplifi and other businesses, mentoring founders and supporting early-stage companies beyond his own organisation. The people behind the business Perhaps the most striking part of Hedge's final post was that it was not centred on financial milestones. Instead, he thanked colleagues who had been with him since YAAP's early days, naming team members who helped build different parts of the company and acknowledging industry veteran Raj Nayak as "our guiding light and the calm in all our chaos." He also celebrated YAAP being recognised as a Great Place to Work for the fifth consecutive year and as one of India's Happiest Places to Work for the third straight year. "Businesses are not built on balance sheets alone. They are built on dreams that survive difficult days. On teams that choose to stay. On partners who believe," he wrote. A career that grew with India's digital industry Over a career spanning more than 30 years, Hegde witnessed and helped shape the evolution of India's advertising industry from traditional media to digital, influencer marketing and artificial intelligence. His final LinkedIn post ended with a line that summed up the optimism with which he viewed YAAP's future, "The bell wasn't the finish line. We are just getting started." Today, those words stand as both a reflection of YAAP's journey and of the vision that defined Atul Hegde's career.
