Subaru of America is recalling 541,237 vehicles in the U.S. because the certification label attached to each car lists an incorrect Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced. The recall affects certain 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid, 2025-2026 Forester, and 2019-2026 Ascent models, according to AP News and the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
"posing potential safety risks"
The error could lead to owners unknowingly overloading their vehicles, which the NHTSA warned may increase the risk of a crash. No mechanical defect exists, and Subaru does not require owners to bring their cars to a dealership. Instead, the company will mail corrected labels, AP News reported.
"Subaru says it is unaware of any related crashes or injuries."
Despite the absence of reported incidents, the scale of the recall underscores how a simple label mistake can trigger a large-scale safety action. The company plans to begin notifying owners in late August, Business Recorder noted. Subaru of America also recently increased vehicle prices, citing market conditions, according to the same outlet.
