Ofcom study finds mobile and Wi-Fi performance on UK trains largely fails to meet standards

29d ago· 1 min readenNews

Summary

Ofcom tested mobile and on-board Wi-Fi performance on main line rail journeys across 24 rail segments in England, Scotland, and Wales. Mobile results fell short of the Good Performance threshold in 83% of cases, while on-board Wi-Fi met performance only 1% of the time. The best-performing network, EE, met the threshold less than half the time, while Three, O2, and Vodafone met it between 17% and 21% of journeys. Good Performance required at least 5 Mbit/s download, 1.5 Mbit/s upload, and 50 ms latency or better. Weak signal along rail corridors was identified as a key issue.
