San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones has called for the cancellation of Kanye West's July 4th concert at the Alamodome, citing his history of hate speech and antisemitic comments. According to Rolling Stone, the mayor argued that a city-funded facility in "Military City USA" should not host someone with such a record. The controversy emerged just one day after tickets went on sale for the performance, Deadline reported.
"a city-funded facility should not host someone with such a record, especially on the nation's 250th birthday."
The mayor's push aligns with a similar effort by Florida Senator Rick Scott, who urged the Tampa Sports Authority to cancel West's concerts at Raymond James Stadium, Rolling Stone noted. Complex.com reported that Mayor Jones emphasized San Antonio's identity as "Military City USA" as an additional reason to cancel the event, particularly on Independence Day.
West, who also goes by Ye, has a well-documented history of making antisemitic remarks, which have led to widespread condemnation and business fallout in recent years. The Alamodome, as a publicly funded venue, is now at the center of a debate over whether it should host an artist with such a record, especially on a national holiday.
The call for cancellation adds to the mounting pressure on venues hosting West's performances, with local officials in multiple states raising concerns about the message such events send. As of now, the Alamodome has not publicly responded to the mayor's request.
