Real Madrid Denies Interest In Enzo Fernandez Transfer

Real Madrid has issued a firm denial of any interest in signing Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez, rejecting speculation that linked the club to a summer transfer for the Argentina international. The Spanish giants released the statement Friday, marking their second public denial of the offseason. Madrid previously refuted reports connecting them to Bayern Munich forward Michael Olise last month. "Real Madrid wishes to express its utmost respect for Enzo Fernandez, a great footballer whose career and quality are widely known, as well as for Chelsea FC, a club with which it maintains an excellent institutional relationship," said the club, in the statement. "Precisely because of the respect that an entity like Chelsea FC deserves and because of the principles of institutional loyalty that have always governed the actions of Real Madrid, the club considers it necessary to categorically deny speculations that are unfounded and do not correspond to reality. "Real Madrid regrets that, despite the clarity of the facts and the absence of any action on the part of the club, information continues to be disseminated that does not correspond to reality and that only serves to create confusion among fans and unnecessarily harm the organisations and individuals involved." Fernandez was reportedly incoming Madrid manager Jose Mourinho's top summer target, though The Athletic previously reported club sources downplaying the likelihood of a deal. Chelsea would reportedly demand roughly $161 million for the 25-year-old despite his contract running through 2032. Fernandez drew scrutiny in March after praising Madrid's lifestyle during an interview with Argentine media, remarks that led Chelsea to bench him for two matches in April. The Argentine midfielder made 54 appearances across all competitions last season, contributing 15 goals and seven assists. He joined Chelsea from Benfica in January 2023 for a then-British record fee of $138 million and has frequently worn the vice-captain's armband. Madrid has already added defender Marc Cucurella from Chelsea this summer, along with free agents Ibrahima Konate and Bernardo Silva. Fernandez remains with Argentina at the World Cup ahead of Friday's round of 32 match against Cape Verde.
