Long-Awaited Persona 4 Remake Will Tone Down Yosuke's Offensive Jokes, Reports Say

A new version of the beloved RPG Persona 4, expected in 2027, is reportedly scrubbing the homophobic content that has aged poorly in the nearly 20-year-old original. According to Polygon, Atlus is revising the controversial character Yosuke Hanamura to be more appropriate for modern audiences. Yosuke was originally written as a comic relief figure whose humor relied heavily on offensive stereotypes, particularly targeting another party member, Kanji. Kotaku independently confirmed the reports, noting that the game is a celebrated RPG about friendship and self-acceptance, but it contained homophobic content that clashed with those themes.
"Yosuke's homophobic behavior and problematic jokes from the original 2008 game are being revised to be more appropriate for modern audiences."
That shift reflects a broader industry trend of revisiting older games with modern sensibilities, Polygon noted. The development comes as Atlus prepares to reintroduce a title that many fans consider a classic but which has drawn increasing criticism for its dated portrayals.
"The game, originally released nearly 20 years ago, is a celebrated RPG about friendship and self-acceptance, but it contained homophobic content, notably Yosuke's berating of Kanji (whose shadow appeared as a gay bath house patron) and mocking of the protagonist."
Kotaku added that Yosuke is apparently getting changes to how he 'treats outsiders,' suggesting the remake is removing or altering the homophobic content to better align with the game's themes of acceptance. The reported revisions aim to preserve Yosuke's core personality while dropping the offensive material that defined much of his original comic relief role, Polygon reported. Fans of the series will likely watch closely to see how Atlus balances modernization with the original character's spirit.
