Paul Pelosi, the 86-year-old husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, is facing a hit-and-run charge after he allegedly struck a parked car and drove away in Napa County, California. The Napa County Sheriff's Office confirmed the incident occurred on Friday afternoon in Yountville, according to NBC News and ABC News.
A witness reported the crash to law enforcement, stating that Pelosi briefly stopped after the collision before driving away, the Los Angeles Times reported. He was driving a brown convertible at the time, according to the same outlet. The sheriff's office said the incident did not appear to involve alcohol, The Independent reported.
"Authorities ruled out DUI in the Paul Pelosi hit-and-run, but the sheriff's office is submitting a driver re-evaluation referral to the California DMV."
The referral adds another layer to the legal situation, which could result in administrative action from the DMV regardless of the criminal charge. CBS News reported that Pelosi is suspected of crashing into a parked car and driving away from the scene.
The Napa County Sheriff's Office said the charge is being filed, and the case will be forwarded to the district attorney for possible prosecution, according to multiple outlets. The vehicle he struck was unoccupied at the time of the crash, the Los Angeles Times noted.
