Baker's TakeOpenAI Unveils a $230 Control Pad for Its Codex Coding Agent

OpenAI has released its first hardware device, a limited-edition desktop keypad called the Codex Micro that is designed to help users monitor and control AI coding agents. The device, priced at $230, was created in collaboration with Work Louder, a boutique hardware company known for customizable mechanical keyboards and shortcut controllers, according to Slashdot. The launch follows a tease from the company last month.

The small, square macro pad sits beside a regular keyboard and features 13 mechanical switches, a backlit keypad, a rotary knob, a tiny joystick, and a touch sensor. The keys are customizable and include a push-to-talk option as well as a dial to adjust the reasoning setting, Slashdot reported. The device closely resembles Work Louder's existing Creator Micro 2 product and a previous collaboration with Figma, The Verge noted.

PCMag emphasized that the Codex Micro is not a conventional keyboard, as it contains only 12 keys along with a joystick and a knob. The launch is separate from OpenAI's rumored main hardware project, which is speculated to be a smart speaker, according to The Verge.
