OpenAI Begins Testing Ads in ChatGPT for US Users

OpenAI has started testing advertisements in ChatGPT for logged-in US users with free or ChatGPT Go subscriptions, according to The Verge. The ads appear at the bottom of chatbot responses and are clearly labeled as sponsored content, the outlet reported.
Hacker News reported that OpenAI emphasized ChatGPT's responses will not be influenced by ads and that the company will never sell user data to advertisers. The ads are designed to support free access to ChatGPT while maintaining user control, clear labeling, answer independence, and strong privacy protections, according to Hacker News.
The Verge noted that the ads show sponsored products or services related to conversations, but OpenAI stressed that conversations will remain private from advertisers and data won't be sold. Hacker News added that ads will not be shown to users under 18 and will not appear near sensitive topics like politics, health, and mental health.
CEO Sam Altman has previously expressed reservations about ads potentially eroding user trust, Hacker News reported.
Despite Altman's past concerns, Hacker News reported positive early results from the pilot, including no impact on consumer trust metrics, low ad dismissal rates, and improving ad relevance. The company plans to expand the test to Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, according to Hacker News.
