NTPC-SAIL Power Company Limited (NSPCL), a joint venture company of NTPC Limited, has informed via its e-mail dated 30th June 2026 about the commissioning of its 15 MW Bhilai Floating Solar Power Station in Chhattisgarh. In a regulatory filing , the company announced that the third and final module (Island-2) of 5 MW (2 × 2.5 MW) of the NSPCL Bhilai Floating Solar Power Station was successfully commissioned on 24th June 2026. Accordingly, the entire 15 MW Floating Solar Power Station has been declared commercially operational with effect from 24th June 2026. NTPC Awarded 15 MW Bhilai Floating Solar Contract to Madhav Infra In 2024, NSPCL issued a Letter of Acceptance (LoA) to Madhav Infra Projects (MIPL) to develop a 15 MW floating solar power plant in Chhattisgarh. The company secured the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract for the development of the 15 MW floating solar photovoltaic project at Maroda Reservoir-I in Bhilai, Chhattisgarh. The project is being executed by NTPC-SAIL Power Company Limited (NSPCL), a 50:50 joint venture between NTPC Limited and SAIL. The company was established in 2001 to supply power to SAIL's Bhilai, Durgapur, and Rourkela Steel Plants in eastern India. Power generated from the floating solar plant will be consumed by the Bhilai Steel Plant as captive power . India Set to See Floating Solar + BESS Projects In a bid to support the Centre's latest initiative to develop floating solar projects integrated with Battery Energy Storage Systems ( BESS ) across India, the Expenditure Finance Committee (EFC) approved a new initiative. The Finance Ministry approved a proposed ₹5,500 crore scheme focused on floating solar projects integrated with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). The proposal will now be forwarded to the Union Cabinet for final approval as India accelerates efforts to strengthen energy security and expand renewable energy capacity. The initiative aims to encourage states and project developers to deploy floating solar installations along with battery storage infrastructure across the country. Floating solar systems are installed on reservoirs and other water bodies, which may help reduce pressure on land availability while improving solar generation performance due to the cooling effect of water surfaces.
