Sony has confirmed that starting January 2028, new PlayStation games will no longer be released on physical discs, shifting entirely to digital distribution via the PlayStation Store and other digital retailers. The decision, which will affect both PS5 and future PS6 games, was announced in response to changing consumer trends, according to a blog post on playstation.com reported by famiboards.
"In response to shifting trends in consumer preference, new games will be released on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only."
The move has ignited fierce backlash from gamers and retailers. IGN reported that a petition opposing the decision has garnered over 300,000 signatures, and a retailer association criticized Sony for eliminating consumer choice. Social media channels have been flooded with angry comments, as Kotaku noted that outrage has spilt over onto YouTube, the PlayStation Blog, and other platforms, with even unrelated game studios catching negative remarks.
"Genuine banger games are being buried by your awful decision."
This torrent of criticism has, according to a separate IGN article, overshadowed PlayStation's online activity, effectively burying positive news about new game releases. Kotaku highlighted one curious exception: "kids and family games, whose comment sections remain untouched by the outrage." Sony has not indicated any willingness to reconsider the policy, and the transition to a digital-only future appears to be set in stone, drawing a line under an era of physical media for PlayStation. Parade Magazine summed up the sentiment: "The death of physical media continues."
