Nintendo has announced that it will introduce user-replaceable batteries for the Switch 2 in Europe, complying with upcoming European Union battery regulations that take effect in February 2027. The revised hardware will roll out gradually, with Hacker News reporting that the change will start in summer 2026 and continue through early 2027. The updated console will be slightly heavier than the current model, according to IGN, due to the new battery design.
"Nintendo's new Switch 2 model for Europe will roll out this fall, with user-replaceable batteries that make the console slightly heavier."
While the weight increases, IGN noted that the overall design remains familiar, and Hacker News emphasized that "the revised products will have no functional differences from current models." This means performance and features should be identical, with the only change being the battery replaceability.

The move comes in response to European Union legislation requiring consumer electronics to have easily replaceable batteries, as previously reported by Japanese newspaper Nikkei, cited by IGN. Nintendo is preparing both the Switch 2 and various accessories to meet these standards ahead of the 2027 deadline.
Nintendo's phased rollout in Europe means the new battery-equipped Switch 2 will first appear in summer 2026, with a broader replacement of stock expected by early the following year. The company has not yet detailed whether the user-replaceable battery design will be adopted in other regions.
