Jim James, frontman of My Morning Jacket, has announced his first solo album in eight years. Titled "Wowed Out," the record is set for release on August 28 via ATO Records, with the lead single "Come Again" arriving alongside a psychedelic music video, as reported by Pitchfork, Stereogum, and Rolling Stone.
According to Rolling Stone, the album is built around music James originally composed for two film projects in the early 2010s. The lead single "Come Again" has a particularly peculiar origin: it started as a cue written for a scene set in a teddy bear factory. James has since transformed the track into a "psychedelic meditation on finding beauty in a chaotic world," per Rolling Stone.
"I hope it brings the same joy and comfort to listeners that it brought to me during the creative process."
James described the album-making process as dreamlike, telling Pitchfork that creating "Wowed Out" brought him joy and comfort. The album marks his first solo release since 2018's "Uniform Distortion," though My Morning Jacket put out their tenth album, "Is," just last year, according to floodmagazine.com.
In addition to the album announcement, Stereogum reported that James will perform at the Music From The Films Of Wes Anderson event at the Hollywood Bowl in July, sharing the bill with Bill Murray, Beck, Jackson Browne, and Britt Daniel. The 48-year-old three-time GRAMMY winner is also set to tour behind "Wowed Out" later this year.
