A broad coalition of music industry organizations has unveiled a voluntary labeling program to help listeners identify how artificial intelligence was used in a sound recording. The initiative, announced today by groups including the RIAA, IFPI, the Recording Academy (The Grammys), SAG-AFTRA, and the Human Artistry Campaign, aims to bring transparency to a growing number of tracks that incorporate AI. According to the RIAA, the program has broad support from international and independent music bodies such as A2IM, WIN, and IMPALA.

The system proposes two distinct labels for use by digital music services and distributors. A label marked “AI-generated” would apply to songs created wholly or mostly with AI, while an “AI-assisted” label would indicate recordings where AI played a supporting role. Deadline reported that the icons were designed for adoption across streaming platforms to inform consumers about AI involvement in music production.

The Hollywood Reporter noted the initiative is structured similarly to how explicit content is currently labeled on streaming services. As AI-generated songs continue to proliferate on platforms like Spotify and Apple Music, the coalition hopes the labels will give listeners clear, track-level information without requiring new legislation.

The labels are voluntary, meaning adoption will depend on individual streaming services and distributors. The coalition includes not only major labels but also artist and performer representatives, signaling unified industry interest in addressing the rapid rise of AI in music creation. No timeline for implementation has been announced.
