Microsoft enables SQL Server license portability to Amazon RDS
By
Lindsay Clark
Summary
Microsoft has announced that customers can now bring their own SQL Server licenses (BYOL) to Amazon RDS, AWS's managed relational database service. Previously, SQL Server licenses with Software Assurance could only be used on self-managed Amazon EC2 instances through Microsoft's License Mobility program. This change allows customers who chose AWS to more easily consume SQL Server as a managed database service rather than running it on virtual machines, potentially reducing costs and operational overhead for enterprises using both Microsoft and AWS technologies.
