Biopic 'Michael' Dethrones 'Oppenheimer' with Nearly $1 Billion Global Box Office

"Michael," the Michael Jackson biopic, has grossed $977 million worldwide, surpassing Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" ($975 million) to become the highest-grossing biopic of all time.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua and distributed by Lionsgate in the U.S. and Universal internationally, 'Michael' is still playing in some territories, including Japan and Russia, according to Deadline. That continued theatrical presence suggests the film's total could climb even higher before its run ends.

The biopic had already broken the record for the biggest musical biopic, beating 'Bohemian Rhapsody' ($911 million), as noted by Variety. Meanwhile, Deadline highlighted the benchmark it surpassed: 'Oppenheimer' reached $975.8 million through seven Oscar wins, including Best Picture and Best Director, and a late boost from Japan.

"has surpassed 'Oppenheimer' to become the highest-grossing biopic of all time with $977.4 million at the global box office."

The record underscores the enduring global appeal of Michael Jackson's story, even as the film's commercial success outpaces that of both a celebrated historical epic and the previous king of music biopics.
