Meta plans $13 billion AI data centre in Alberta, sources say

Meta invests $13-billion in Alberta AI data centre, backed by new natural gas plant

Meta Platforms Inc. is investing over $13-billion to build a massive 1-gigawatt AI data centre in Sturgeon County, north of Edmonton, Alberta — its first such facility in Canada. The campus will span 1,750 acres and consume nearly as much electricity as the city of Edmonton (1.4 GW). To power the facility, a separate $4.6-billion natural gas plant will also be built in the county. The project represents one of the largest tech infrastructure investments in Canadian history and underscores the enormous energy demands of the AI industry.

Key quotes

Meta described the data centre in a news release Wednesday as a 1-gigawatt facility, referring to the amount of electricity it will consume.
For comparison, the city of Edmonton draws about 1.4 gigawatts.
The data centre campus will be built on 1,750 acres of land, according to a company spokesperson, well over the size of Stanley Park in Vancouver.
