Meta plans $13 billion AI data centre in Alberta, sources say

Meta to invest $13-billion in Alberta AI data centre, its first in Canada

Meta Platforms Inc. is investing over $13 billion to build a massive AI data centre in Sturgeon County, Alberta, north of Edmonton — its first such facility in Canada. The 1-gigawatt facility will consume nearly as much electricity as the entire city of Edmonton (1.4 GW) and will be built on 1,750 acres of land. To power the data centre, a separate $4.6-billion natural gas plant will also be constructed in the county.

Meta described the data centre in a news release as a 1-gigawatt facility, referring to the amount of electricity it will consume.
For comparison, the city of Edmonton draws about 1.4 gigawatts.
The data centre campus will be built on 1,750 acres of land, according to a company spokesperson, well over the size of Stanley Park in Vancouver.
