James Gunn has confirmed that Xolo Maridueña will reprise his role as Jaime Reyes / Blue Beetle in the upcoming "Superman" sequel titled "Man of Tomorrow." Variety reported that Gunn made the announcement on Michael Rosenbaum's podcast, cementing Blue Beetle's place in the rebooted DC Universe. The film is currently in production.
According to Whatfinger, Gunn has previously stated that Blue Beetle is the DCU's first character, making Maridueña's Jaime Reyes the foundational hero of the new cinematic universe. The original "Blue Beetle" film was released in August 2023 under the previous DC regime.
"Blue Beetle survived both a box-office disaster and the collapse of the DCEU."
The Playlist highlighted the character's improbable journey from a standalone film that underperformed theatrically to becoming a key figure in Gunn's rebooted franchise. Now, Maridueña's return signals that the DC Studios co-head sees lasting potential in the young hero.
The scoop was first reported by industry insider Daniel Richtman, according to Cosmic Book News, before being picked up by TheWrap and later confirmed by Gunn himself. Feature First noted that the film "Man of Tomorrow" will serve as Blue Beetle's formal reintroduction into the DCU.
"Guess who's back? The Blue Beetle is making a comeback in Man of Tomorrow."
IGN captured the excitement surrounding the announcement, with Maridueña's casting bridging the old DCEU and the new DC slate. As production continues on Gunn's "Superman" sequel, fans can expect to see Blue Beetle alongside the Man of Steel when the film arrives.
