MagicCon Amsterdam delivered a sweeping preview of what’s next for Magic: The Gathering, unveiling a full 2027 slate that includes six new sets and a return to the convention circuit in four cities worldwide. Polygon reported that the event revealed the full release schedule for 2027, comprising three premier sets and three Universes Beyond crossover releases.
Three in-universe sets, codenamed “Socks,” “Candles,” and “Slippers”, will anchor the year for original Magic content. But Why Tho? noted that the panel teased a return to the world of Kamigawa as part of these releases. Meanwhile, MMORPG highlighted that a new kaiju-themed set is scheduled to arrive in 2026, setting the stage before the 2027 schedule begins.
"Magic: The Gathering revealed the full release schedule for 2027 at MagicCon Amsterdam, including six sets: three premier sets (codename 'Socks,' 'Candles,' and 'Slippers') and three Universes Beyond sets (Marvel's Spider-Man, a second Marvel set, and a return to the Final Fantasy universe)."
Polygon further detailed that the Universes Beyond lineup will feature Marvel’s Spider-Man, an additional untitled Marvel set, and a return to the Final Fantasy universe, continuing Magic’s strategy of weaving crossover IPs alongside original lore.
Star City Games confirmed that MagicCons will expand to four cities in 2027, bringing back the in-person celebration alongside the return of the Magic Hall of Fame. The outlet reported: "Four MagicCons, return of the Magic Hall of Fame, and more also announced." Nerdist added that the Amsterdam panel also revealed several new sets and dates for future MagicCons extending into 2027.
But Why Tho? characterized the panel as the first glimpse at the company’s plans, noting it “unveiled the first details about the MagicCon events and original Magic sets for 2027.” With a mix of beloved planes, fresh IPs, and a revived convention circuit, Magic: The Gathering is laying groundwork for a busy year ahead.
