Norwegian study finds 62% rise in mental health consultations driven by symptom-coded visits, not disorder diagnoses

3d ago· 19 min readenInsight

Summary

A nationwide Norwegian register-based study (2010–2024, N=3,728,002) found that mental health consultation prevalence increased by 62% (from 9.9% to 16.0%), driven primarily by symptom-coded consultations for anxiety and depression rather than disorder-coded diagnoses. Anxiety symptom consultations rose from 0.44% to 1.7%, while depressive symptom consultations increased from 0.73% to 1.8%. In contrast, disorder-coded consultations were stable or rose modestly. After 2020, depressive symptom prevalence accelerated among adults aged 21–30. The findings suggest lowered help-seeking thresholds and/or changes in clinical coding, though underlying increases in distress cannot be ruled out.
