Mortal Shell 2 Physical Edition Sell-Out Fuels Debate Over Sony's Disc Production Plans

Mortal Shell 2's PS5 physical Revered Edition has sold out across multiple retailers before its August 20 launch, leaving developer Cold Symmetry and publisher Playstack unable to promise restocks. Push Square reported that demand for the boxed copy has "exceeded expectations" and outstripped supply, making it unlikely that the Revered Edition will return to stock before release day.
The Revered Edition is a PS5-exclusive physical bundle that includes a physical artbook, art cards, and digital bonuses on top of the game disc. According to GameSpot, Cold Symmetry confirmed the supply shortfall on X on July 16, apologizing to players who were planning to preorder the version. Insider Gaming added that stock has been fully reserved at numerous retailers, with no guarantee of replenishment after launch.
"We sincerely apologize if you were planning on preordering the Revered Edition for PS5. Demand has exceeded expectations."
The sell-out arrives against the backdrop of Sony's announced plan to halt disc production for new PlayStation games by 2028, a decision that has spurred a continuing campaign from physical-media advocates. IGN reported that fans are "sending the news Sony's way as they continue to push the company to reverse its decision to do away with discs." The Mortal Shell 2 shortage gives those advocates a concrete example of ongoing consumer appetite for physical games.
GamesRadar+ characterized the situation as an accidental argument for discs, noting that demand for the PS5-exclusive physical edition of an indie soulslike outstripped supply even as Sony moves toward an all-digital future. VG Times and GameLoop similarly noted that the preorder sell-out sharpens the debate over physical media, with the Revered Edition now unavailable in many territories ahead of its launch window.
